Anyone who knows me is aware that I am obsessed with the show American Pickers (History channel). It's the true story of two childhood friends (Mike and Frank) from Iowa who travel the country searching barns and houses for vintage objects - everything from old signs, gas pumps, toys, furniture, etc. The series is engaging on several levels. First, the story of two longtime friends doing what they LOVE; they are following their passion, which they have incorporated into their professions. Second, they often "freestyle" - which means they knock on doors to houses to people they do not know without any advance warning. Mike and Frank create an instant connection with the homeowners by sharing their passion and love for the collectibles. More often then not, they are welcomed in! Third, they are rescuing items - actually pieces of history that have sat in the corner of a building for up to decades. Fourth, there is the playful negotiation banter back and forth on price. The haggling is all part of the joy of the experience. Fifth, and finally, every customer says that they hope that Mike and Frank return to buy more items the next time their travels take them past their houses. What could be better than that - raving fans! You can see the fun that Mike and Frank are having, their passion, their love. How can we ALL create an American Pickers' experience into our work lives? Are you?
